OBAMA proposes a $3.5-billion project that, among other things, would double the size of the Peace Corps, enlarge the federal AmeriCorps service program, expand summer learning programs and also forgive a portion of student loan debts for students who perform community service.
McCAIN would expand the AmeriCorps program, which pays high school and college students for performing community service. He also proposes federal challenge grants and tax breaks to help leverage private investment in community service projects. In addition, he would require that work-study programs at colleges receiving federal funds be more directed to community service needs.
