Barack Obama and John McCain are expected to shake up the electoral map this year. Each is already shaking up the conventional wisdom a bit on how they would handle tax policy. That may augur well for the big tax battles awaiting the next president and Congress.

 

Some powerful forces are going after the corporate income tax -- everyone from George Bush to John McCain to Barack Obama's new economic adviser, Jason Furman. A flatter and fairer tax seems like a good possibility...and some want to go even further and just get rid of it.

 

The debate over economic policy that began this week is a welcome development, a move toward a serious election debate on real issues that will hopefully overshadow the nonsense about fist taps and who has the most lobbyists on staff. But if it's to be meaningful, the candidates must provide more details of their plans and stop mischaracterizing their opponents' position.
 

John McCain's call today for a gas tax holiday this summer is an insult to the intelligence of American voters. He really ought to be ashamed.
