FALL ELECTION
Blue Collar Whites: Does Obama Need Them?
When tonight's results from
Here's a dirty little secret: Obama can win in November without very many blue collar whites. And anyway, whether he tries to win them over or not, it may not matter much. He'll still get many who are determined to see a Democrat in the White House and he'll have a chance of slim to none in winning over those who just don't trust or like him.
You can debate the reasons why working class whites without college educations are voting for Hillary -- maybe they're racists, maybe they think Obama is too elite or too liberal or as analyst Rhodes Cook recently put it, maybe they were horrified at his bowling. But whatever their reason, the decision of many working class whites to go Democratic or Republican in November will have little to do with Obama and more to do with trends, issues and feelings.
Consider this: Voting in the
That may be because they finally gave up on the Democrats and became Republicans or it may be that they changed their views -- but again it doesn't really matter. Democrats hold a huge advantage over Republicans in claimed and real party affiliation, so even if they've lost the Reagan Democrats, all they have to do is hold on to enough of their self-identified voters and cut reasonably well into the independent bloc to do just fine in November. And given the strong desire to change the direction set by Republicans over the past eight years, many independents are squarely on the Democrats' side.
Another way to look at it is to consider the results in
This isn't to suggest that Obama doesn't need to work on his "elitist" image and try to win over as much of the white vote as he can by offering economic programs that appeal to working class voters. How successful he is can make a big difference in some swing states.
But the fact is that some of these whites will never vote for Obama. Fortunately for him, though, it's also a fact that he can put together a winning coalition without them. He's already made a good start in the primaries. He just needs to build upon it.

Don't you think it is racism that drives almost 100% of black voters to support Obama?
I am a 63 year old African American who was a die hard Clinton (especially Bill) after the first two primaries. The Clintons (Bill and Hillary) tactics and attitudes toward Obama changed my affilation right after the North Carolina primary.
My wife and I voted for Hillary (California primary) because I felt she had the experience needed although I felt that she would be a lightning rod for the Republicans during the general election if she went on to become the nominee. My feelings for Obama centered around thinking he should have waited for 4 or 8 years depending upon if Hillary got elected.
The gaul to say anything and throw everything at Obama with hints of appealing to those who are truly racist turned my stomach and affiliation from Bill and his wife.
Obama stated one fact in one of his speeches. He said something like, "There is a time for change in direction our country is headed...and I am afraid we are approaching the critical hour when it may be too late to change the rethoric and tone of how we debate issues of importance in this country."
I am so sick of watching the Republican spin doctors, with most in the media egging them on, shout down the opposing viewpoints on talk shows or whereever a meaningful debate is suppose to occur. It is depressing to watch a grown man or woman spout the Republican party line to any and every question of the day.
No...I will not vote for Obama (if nominated) because he is black. In fact, I would vote for Bugs Bunny if nominated and he promised to change the Star Newspaper-Fox Editors & Newscasters, Talk Radio, G Dubya/Cheney (do as I say and don't worry about it) type of debates about this country's direction and other items of importance. My belief is Obama will and Bill and Hillary will not. That is why I now support and continue to pray to God that Obama gets elected. And oh by the way, I agree with Mr. Willen. There are some whites that will not vote for Mr. Obama...but millions more will. Why...they are tired of the seening the same old crap as well. Go Obama.
