REPUBLICAN CAMPAIGN
Huckabee's Not Riding Into the Sunset

Comments (9) |

Keep an eye on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Although he quit his long-shot race for the GOP nomination last night and endorsed John McCain, he's not about to disappear. And he may well be just the healer the fractured GOP needs.

Huckabee, who lacked name recognition and had bare-bones funding, lasted much longer and went much farther in the race than anyone had anticipated -- largely because of evangelicals who felt a little sidelined by the other Republican candidates. The former Baptist minister with the golden tongue wowed conservative audiences throughout the campaign and again last night with his graceful concession speech.

McCain will win southern states in November anyway, but he could tap Huckabee to be the GOPs healer-in-chief. He may be on the short list to be a vice presidential pick, as a courtesy if nothing else, and he'll play a big role at the Republican convention with prime-time ranking and with campaign speeches that will help rally social conservatives.

He's carved out a role for himself as a leader of the Evangelical movement for years to come, and talk of him even getting a nightly TV talk show on cable isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. In any event, he'll occupy a very visible role for years to come, giving him an important perch, especially if a Democrat wins in November and Republicans look again for a unifying candidate in 2012.

It is a sad day for me now that Huckabee has dropped out. The republicans are stuck with Juan Mccain, but I am not. I really will have no reason to stand in line at the poll. Juan Mccain will be a letdown to the people who put their faith into him. He won't secure the border and our country will be overrun with millions more, coming here for Juan Mccain's promised amnesty. Why bother to even have elections, big business runs the show now.

I'm shocked and disappointed that Huckabee would take money from struggling, hard-working Americans in order to fund his campaign. He said in his drop-out speech that it was..."the sacrifices of a truck driver in Michigan, of a housewife who sold her wedding ring on eBay and gave the contribution to the campaign, a janitor in Alabama who has a wife in a wheelchair who gave $20, not out of his abundance, but out of his poverty, so that our campaign could stay on the track." In a bad economy, why would someone running for President take their money to fund a campaign that was clearly going to be fruitless? What would become of the economy if selfish Huckabee were President?

To JOS76: The grass roots followers of Mike Huckabee gave freely and willingly, in small amounts I might add, to support A MAN THAT REPRESENTS the "COMMON CITIZEN", unlike the three SENATORS that had financial support from unwilling tax payers that had their money (YOURS AND MINE ), taken from us to pay these SENATORS. and fund them in their campaigning.

Do you like having your money stolen from you to finance the three remaining candidates?

I'm amazed how you along with most in the wires NEVER credit Huckabee's support for the FAIR TAX, not the support of Evangelical Christians! MILLIONS OF PEOPLE supported him on the basis of his stance on the Fairtax. Get it straight. Shame on you.

Huckabee got $200 from me and I'm ..well..poor I guess.

It was Money well worth it; and not only that, he has inspired me to become more politically engaged in the GOP.

Isn't that the perfect picture of what politics should look like Jos76? Or should taxpayers all share the burden equally to fund the Ideas of their political rivals as John McCain believes?

Dear Jos76

PS

I've seen your rant posted 'CUT-n-PASTED' in at least three other threads verbatim.

The Republican establishment has used religious conservatives for years to gain power. This year a member of that group, Huckabee, ran for office and received the nuclear treatment from the establishment an its chattering pundits. This was an eye opener. I stopped watching Faux News.

I am a Christian conservative first and a Republican second. McCain is a bitter pill to swallow. If Huckabee is not on the Republican ticket, I will stay home on election day. If Clinton/Obama win Iowa, so be it.

What a legacy -- is Mike Huckabee 'Horton the Elaphant?'

Reading on Catholic Online I came across an early description of 'what a Christian is'. Acording to the author it is (in condensed form) 'One who is in the world but not of the world. Hated by both Jew and Gentile but for no reason they can comprehend'.

It is amazing that the GOP candidate who 'HOLDS' over one third of the party nationwide and most probably more in Republican 'red?' states is now resting up after defeat. While the presumptive one travels on tax dollars to view Europe? Will there be stops at the AIRBUS plants over there?

It came to me one morning that Mike Huckabee is Dr. Seuss's (Horton the Elephant). It was one of those weird analogies that we sometimes entertain but it keeps growing in me. This is making me look closer at Dr. Seuss and wonder more about the messages in his writings.

While the Catholic comparisons to David vs. Goliath still hold true, I keep wondering who is the real Giant? Is it the DEMS? Not the friendly green Giant McCain at this jucture. But God has shown us as in scripture, Mikes words, Super Tuesday, and Warrenpiece 'SUPER TUESDAY' video that "One small stone.. and the widow's mite.. are truisms today." Go back further in David's life and wonder what beast he has fallen this year...? The bear, lion.. And remember that David was at the first not in war for his lethal ability but only to play music for the king. These things need time to see through yet.

This is one of those mornings where all of the Media ..well 'alot of it' was focussed on Mike's withdrawal from the campaign. According to news McCain had now finally made it impossible for Mike to win 'again just like before'. We were all here asking Mike for support....tell us Mike! What are they saying!!! There was a story I think on Huffington Post Mocking President Huckabee for supporting a life amendment in Colorado I think? The headline was 'Mike is the Eggman!' spinning on the old Beatles tune Walrus. Suddenly it dropped to me that Mike is the Eggman...he is the Elephant 'Horton' whom Dr. Sues envisioned! I remembered What Horton said "I meant what I said and I said what I meant, this elephant is faithful one hundred percent!" and he was!

Ok if you have never read Horton hatches the Egg things might seem a little weird from here on out but try to envision it.

I meant what I said and I said What I meant! This elephant is faithful 100%. Through it all Horton stayed and sat on the egg and then in the end the egg hatched and forsook its bird mom for Horton! It was a next generation of flying elephants!
